About Me

Hello! I am the Chief of the Pathology Department for the East Bay. It is my pleasure to lead one of the most highly respected departments in the Bay Area.

The specialty of Pathology is the study of the nature, causes and diagnosis of diseases. When I began Medical School, I was unaware that such a specialty even existed! Our job is to assist our clinical colleagues in providing the appropriate treatment for their patients. We do this by examining tissue specimens from patients as well as by managing the Clinical Laboratory where blood testing is done. These activities place us at the center of much of the patient care activity and provide many opportunities to interact with the other physicians on a daily basis. What I enjoy the most about my job is the satisfaction that comes from being able to help with the care of so many patients from so many different specialties.

I enjoy working at Kaiser Permanente because of the excellence of the doctors and the camaraderie that exists between departments. We are all committed to providing the best possible care for all of our members. I believe that Kaiser Permanente is the best place to be a physician because the leadership actively supports the doctors in achieving this goal. I especially appreciate the emphasis on preventive care and promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

In addition to my hospital responsibilities, I am involved in research projects with the Kaiser Division of Research and I have an appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor in the UC Berkeley-UC San Francisco Joint Medical Program.

My interests outside of the Medical Center include sports, particularly the Toledo Mud Hens, the Oakland A’s and the Forty Niners, outdoor activities, traveling, cooking and reading.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
