About Me

Welcome to my home page.

I was born in New Jersey, and have lived in several states, including Wisconsin, New York, Massachusetts and New Mexico. I moved to California in the early 70's and the Bay Area has been home to me since then. Before entering medical school I was avidly interested in gardening, ecology and ethnobotany, and also worked as a piano tuner and rebuilder. I was close to pursuing graduate studies in botany when I decided to become a physician instead.

During my residency in General Psychiatry, I became fascinated with the complexities of human growth and development, and so I decided to complete a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I love working with kids and teens. I enjoy their company, their sense of humor, and their fresh perspective. It has been a privilege to get to know my patients and their families, to work with them during times of transition, and to observe children grow increasingly capable, creative, and healthy.

After completing my training in Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, I became an Assistant Clinical Professor at Stanford and also Director of the Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Service at Lucille Packard Hospital.

Supervising and teaching in an academic setting was rewarding but I wanted to be able to offer more direct patient care and I began my career with Kaiser Permanente in 1994. I am delighted to practice in a multidisciplinary setting with a wonderful team of providers here in the Psychiatry Clinic. I facilitate parent groups, supervise practitioners in training and I care for patients of all ages. I am a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

If you are planning to meet with me for a medication consultation for your child, please arrange for me to have relevant information. This might include academic records, a call from a previous psychiatrist, a psychotherapist or a teacher, and copies of previous academic or psychological testing. This information will make our first meeting more useful and enjoyable. Ask our reception staff for Release of Information forms, which allow us to speak with your school staff or mental health practitioners. Please do not bring your child to our first meeting if he or she is younger than 12. This will allow us to speak in detail about your concerns.

My passion is preventive health care. Seeing children, teens, parents, and young adults allows my to offer early interventions and promote healthy choices. I have had the opportunity to see children with challenges grow into interesting teens, and then into vibrant and creative young adults. Young people are resilient and can make wonderful changes in their lives.

When I am not at work, I enjoy time with family and friends, community volunteer activities, and several hobbies including playing classical and jazz guitar.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
