About Me

I come from a family of physicians. Both of my parents were physicians and my desire to be a physician came at an early age. I am a local boy, having spent much of my childhood in San Francisco. I consider the Bay Area my home.

I entered U. C. Berkeley to study engineering. Much of what I learned in engineering is applicable to the areas of physiology and pharmacology since much of the mathematics used to describe physiologic and pharmacologic processes are the same as those used in engineering. I turned down a position at Stanford for a career at Kaiser Permanente San Jose. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Kaiser Permanente’s integrated approach to medical care is the best model for care and the best hope for us as a nation during this health care crisis. I have practiced at Kaiser Permanente San Jose for 20 years, having been the Chief of Anesthesia here for nine years and now one of the Assistant Physician-in-Chiefs of the Medical Center.

Although I now spend at least half my time doing administrative work, my greatest satisfaction as a physician comes from working as an anesthesiologist. Guiding patients through one of the most stressful experiences of their lives in a manner which is safe and comforting is one of my greatest pleasures.

Clinical Interests

To me, Anesthesia is the most satisfying field of medicine. I particularly enjoy providing anesthetic care that is excellent, safe, and personalized.

My Philosophy of Care

Anesthesia is a very technical specialty. Advances in our field have been primarily in the areas of monitoring and pharmacology. However, technical excellence is merely a prerequisite to providing good anesthesia. It is the personal touch that distinguishes excellence in anesthesia. Providing anesthetic care that is tailored to the specific patient’s needs and establishing that understanding and connection with my patients is the source of satisfaction in my practice.

On A Personal Note

I enjoy traveling to foreign countries, scuba diving, and skiing. However, my greatest pleasure is actually just being at home with my wife, daughter and son.

My Credentials

Medical school UC Davis School of Medicine, Davis, CA
Internship Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, San Jose, CA
Residency Stanford University Hospital, Stanford, CA
Board certification Anesthesiology, American Board of Anesthesiology

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
