WELCOME TO MY HOME PAGE

Greetings, and thanks for taking the time to visit my home page. My name is Dr. Andrew Pollock, and I practice Internal Medicine at Kaiser Permanente. I really enjoy my practice and my specialty, so if you will indulge me, I would like to tell you about myself and my medical practice at Kaiser Permanente.

About Me

To understand me and my philosophy of medicine, you need to know my background, and why I still slip and say “ya’ll” from time to time. I grew up on the East Coast in Virginia where I went to College and Medical School as well. I am often asked what brought me to California, and I will tell you that it was a bicycle ride! When I was a senior medical student, I visited California for the first time to ride my bicycle down the Coast. From that first day on the Big Sur Coast, I knew that I was going to live in the Golden State. I applied and was accepted at the University of California, Davis to do my Residency and moved to California 8 months later. As you may know, Kaiser Permanente has a training affiliation with UC Davis Medical Center, and my first rotation was at the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Hospital on Morse Avenue in Sacramento. Now, 16 years after finishing my training and becoming Board Certified, I’m still here, and I still ride my bicycle to the hospital nearly every day.

My Healthcare Practice

My current clinical role is that of a Hospitalist. This means that I practice my specialty, Internal Medicine, in a hospital setting and do not have an office-based practice. I take care of hospitalized adults, and provide consultative back-up to the Emergency Department. I have chosen this specialty because I enjoy the acuity of the hospital setting, and the diagnostic challenges that occur on a daily basis. I also enjoy teaching the medical students and residents that rotate from UC Davis.

Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente

I truly believe that Kaiser Permanente is the best place to practice medicine in California. By nearly any measure of outcomes, we practice better medicine, and deliver better health care than anyone else in the state. Kaiser Permanente’s strength comes from the cooperation between the members of the medical group, the hospitals and the Health Plan. Wait, you say, that sounds like an advertisement. I suppose in a way it is, but here, it is the truth. In my hospital practice in Sacramento, I have the assistance of a 500 physician medical group to help solve difficult problems or consult on difficult cases. Since we are partners, we do not compete with each other, and the practice is professional and collegial, even fun. Our goal is simple; to provide the best care for our members that we can. We are assisted by a comprehensive (and unique) computer system that allows us to obtain critical patient records, laboratory, and radiological studies at any time of the day or night. It may surprise you to learn that the doctors in Kaiser Permanente are independent in our medical decision making. The Health Plan does not interfere with the health care decisions that we make for our members. In my 16 years, I have never had to obtain a pre-authorization from an insurance company for any medical service that I can provide. That’s almost unheard of in today’s healthcare environment, except at Kaiser Permanente. I am proud to practice here.

Outside of my practice, I spend 25% of my time in an administrative role as Chief of Quality. In that role, I help set the direction for the entire organization as we improve the quality of care that we deliver to our members. We are widely recognized as “the best” health care delivery system by national organizations and the press. I am proud to be part of that effort. Looking ahead, Kaiser Permanente has initiatives in the pipeline that will revolutionize and improve health care of our members. It will be an exciting time and I’m looking forward to it.

My Outside Interests

In my personal life, I am married and have two teenage children, a son and a daughter, who attend public schools in Sacramento. Recently, we have been spending all of our spare time at water polo games (both my son and daughter play), but I also enjoy bicycling, running, camping, and restoring old Land Cruisers.
