My Qualifications

After a Family Practice residency in Minnesota, my wife and I and two small children joined the Air Force in order to defend freedom and fight communism in the beautiful Mosel River Valley of Germany. The wine was never more than a buck a bottle, and getting paid in deutsche marks felt like getting monopoly money, so we were always out traveling and enjoying the country.

While in the Air Force, I became interested in emergency medicine. I joined the Sacramento Emergency Medical Group and spent my nights tending the sick and injured at several downtown Sacramento hospitals and at Marshall Hospital in Placerville. It was an exciting two years.

I returned to Family Medicine as chief of staff for Family Physicians of Sacramento, a group of 14 physicians providing care for around 25,000 patients belonging to an HMO by the name of Healthcare. Every now and then I meet a patient at Kaiser that I cared for or delivered while at Family Physicians.

The late 1980’s were a time of consolidation in medicine, and some big conglomerate out of Florida bought up our medical group and HMO. My dream had always been to go into Nuclear Medicine, and an opportunity came available to go to Stanford right about the time all these buy-outs were occurring. So, every Sunday I left home after the ABC movie and came back at dinnertime on Friday night. When I would be on call, my family (now a wife and 4 kids) would come to visit in Palo Alto.

I have received the US Air Force Commendation Medal x’s 2 and 1st oak leaf cluster. I have been named as one of Sacramento Magazine’s Top Doctors.

I belong to the Society of Nuclear Medicine. I have been involved in clinical research including radionuclide imaging of possible breast cancers and the use of monoclonal antibodies for infection diagnosis. This has given me the opportunity to be an author in 9 medical journal articles. I enjoy lecturing and help sponsor a yearly symposium for nuclear medicine technologists.

My Healthcare Practice

It is important that I not only understand the medical problems my patients present with, but also that I learn as much as possible about them as a person. I strive to help my patients understand their illness and the treatment so that they can feel more in control of their healthcare.

The whole concept of radioactivity and being able to harness the power of this odorless, invisible substance to diagnose and treat diseases is very amazing and incredible. I really like the science of nuclear medicine, and I particularly enjoy treating hyperthyroid patients and returning them to a state of normal health. Our newest imaging modality is PET scanning, and every scan that we do amazes me in terms of what we can now see within the human body.

I chose Nuclear Medicine because it allows me to help both patients and doctors. I enjoy the fact that I see patients of all ages and get referrals from doctors of all specialties.

I do speak some rudimentary German.

Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente

I enjoy being a physician at Kaiser and receiving my own care at Kaiser because the physicians are the best and have ultimate control over medical decisions. Physicians at Kaiser are free to consult with any of our specialists at any time.

My Outside Interests

During my leisure time, I like to spend time cooking or traveling with my wife, backpacking with my sons, fishing with my friends. I grow about 20 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes and tend a small orchard of 6 grapevines, 5 fruit trees and 3 citrus.
