My Specialty

I am a rheumatologist. Rheumatologists are physicians who specialize in the care of patients with auto-immune disorders and arthritis. Auto-immune disorders are fascinating- they occur when our immune system, which normally fights infections, starts attacking our internal organs.

My Practice Philosophy

My practice philosophy is to partner with patients to educate and assist them in the management of their disease. I also believe in the importance of having processes in place in my practice so that I can deliver optimum care to my patients. I work hard to be at the cutting edge of my speciality. I regularly attend Continuing Medical Education conferences and recently recertified in Internal Medicine (even though it is not necessary since I practise only rheumatology). Finally, I believe in a holistic approach to health (I meditate regularly and have been amazed at the peace and clarity this has given me over the years).

My Credentials

Medical school Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India
Residency Medical Center of Central Massachusetts, Worcester, MA
Fellowship UC Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine
Board certification Rheumatology, American Board of Internal Medicine

I have served as a 'relevance reviewer' for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)for several years. This means I work with this board (which certifies all internists and sub-specialists in the US), to ensure that questions used in the Rheumatology section of board exams are relevant to clinical practice. I also evaluate questions used by the ABIM for re-certification of rheumatologists.

I was a member of the 'Arthritis Foundation Quality Improvement Project.' This was a collaboration between UCLA, the RAND corporation and some of the best rheumatologists in the US. Our work resulted in the inclusion of 'use of DMARDs in RA' as one of the HEDIS measures (HEDIS are a group of quality indicators used to measure the quality of care being provided by health plans all over the country).

I am board certified in Medical Management by the board of American College of Physician Executives.

During my residency, I was awarded the program director's Award for Academic Excellence and Professionalism. During my fellowship, I received '2nd year fellow recognition' from the American College of Rheumatology.

I was recognized at Geisinger, my previous employer, for scoring above the 90th Percentile for patient satisfaction in the nationally validated Press Ganey survey which uses patient satisfaction scores of physicians from several outstanding organizations all over the US as the benchmark.

I have served as the Assistant Medical Director of a large health plan and also as the Assistant Medical Director (and acting Medical Director) of a large medical group in the past. In the distant past (1993) I worked as a staff epidemiologist in a reputed company in Boston run by a group of professors from the Harvard School of Public Health.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I started with Kaiser Permanente in Honolulu in January 2005. After a year and a half in Hawaii we moved to Roseville to be closer to family.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I like working at Kaiser Permanente because it gives me the freedom to practice medicine without worrying about the administrative hassles of managing a practice. I especially like the ethical approach to health care and the freedom I have in deciding what tests and medicines I can use for my patients. Finally, the Electronic Medical Record at Kaiser is a real asset in my ability to practice safe and effective medicine - it allows me to seamlessly integrate my practice with the practice of other physicians who are involved in taking care of patients. I no longer have to decipher the handwriting in paper records, look for hardcopy of lab and x-ray reports or worry about charts not arriving in time for a patient's visits.

My Professional Interests and Affiliations

I am a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. I am an Assistant Professor (volunteer faculty) of Medicine at University of California, Davis. In the past, I have been an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Hawaii and Chief Resident at Memorial Health Care in Worcester, Massachusetts (now UMass-Memorial Health Care). I have several publications in peer-reviewed medical journals.

On a Personal Note…

I am married. My wife, Vandana, has two Masters and a PhD in electrical engineering. We have two wonderful children - Esha and Neel, and a golden retriever (appropriately named Goofy). My hobbies include photography, aquariums (marine and freshwater), golf and traveling. I also play rhythm guitar and harmonica. We love children and for more than ten years now, we have contributed to children's causes all over the world.
