Why I Became a Physician

My father was a physician. He possessed a tremendous pride in the importance and privilege of his work. Although he never overtly directed me toward a career in medicine, his attitude, accomplishments, dedication to his patients, and unwavering interest in the science of medicine made a very formative impression on me. Like my father, I too am fascinated with the science of medicine and possess the desire to make a difference in the lives of my patients.

Why I Became an Anesthesiologist

In medical school, I quickly realized that selecting a specialty was going to be a challenge. I enjoyed many different areas of medicine. Ultimately anesthesiology revealed itself as the ideal specialty and I've never looked back. Anesthesiology is the perfect combination of pure medical knowledge and hands-on care of patients. It requires the ability for clear and concise communication, the capacity for managing all different kinds of patients - from the young to the old, from the very sick to the healthy - and the mastery of critical procedural skills.

Why I Practice at Kaiser Permanente

In my opinion, the Kaiser Permanente model of health care is better than any other. It blends the best aspects of all the other health care systems in which I've practiced. At Kaiser Permanente, physicians are not distracted by the business aspect of medicine. Patients simply get the best care. Practicing at Kaiser Permanente is comparable to practicing in academic medicine - physicians are well educated, stay current in their fields, and communicate freely among each other.

In addition, in my department we function as a team. This means that our patients are cared for by multiple practitioners simultaneously - minimizing risk to the patients and minimizing stress for the clinicians.

My Philosophy on Healing

Prevention is certainly the best medicine. This means living well - regular exercise, healthy diet, proper sleep, minimal stress. In our busy lives (mine included) these goals are not consistently attainable, but we can still strive towards them. Unfortunately, all disease is not preventable. When disease occurs, a multimodal approach is important. Talented physicians, nurses, therapists, and other clinicians are essential to disease management and treatment. In addition, a health care environment which utilizes best practices, evidence based medicine, and consistent management of chronic disease is the gold standard. Kaiser Permanente encompasses all of the above, from emphasis on prevention to quality of disease management.

My Interests Outside Work

I have two young children and my time outside work primarily revolves around them. My sister lives in London; therefore we travel to Europe often. In addition, I enjoy hiking around beautiful Marin County, exercising at the YMCA, and attending the San Francisco Symphony.

My Credentials

Medical school University of North Carolina At Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC
Internship New York University Medical Center, New York, NY
