About Me
I am Dr. Aloysius V. Llaguno. I specialize in the surgical treatment of diseases in the brain and spinal cord, spine, and peripheral nerves. I do most of the pituitary tumors in the Sacramento valley and Vallejo areas, and almost all of the peripheral nerve repairs in the northern California Kaiser. My field of work is stimulating and challenging and there has never been a dull moment since I started practice 17 years ago -- I continue to learn and improve on every encounter with my patients. I enjoy being a neurosurgeon.
I was recruited as a 3rd neurosurgeon 17 years ago by Roderick Smith, M.D., the former chief of neurosurgery now retired. I was the replacement for the physician who was originally hired but at the last moment opted to go in to private practice, which at that time was the way to go. Kaiser Permanente in northern California had about 2.2 million members then. I remember Dr. Smith telling me that in the next 10 years, Kaiser Permanente would be the best place to practice. I believed him and stayed. Now his words are true. Kaiser Permanente has grown to about 3 million members in northern California. I, along with my partners in Neurosurgery, enjoy the practice autonomy, curbside consultation and discussions and teamwork in the long and difficult operations.
My Practice Philosophy
My practice philosophy is simple - to do my best to make the patient and relatives understand the problem. I will discuss all options (both preventive and therapeutic) and offer my best recommendation. Since I deal with difficult cases like pituitary tumors and peripheral nerve injuries and tumors, I encourage patients to come with their relatives and friends during their visit. On my part, because of my accent, I try to speak slowly and use charts, drawings, models and atlases to explain the problem.

On a Personal Note…
I have four grown children. My youngest wants to follow in my footsteps and become a physician. I do not blame her. She volunteers at Kaiser Permanente in Roseville.
For my relaxation and quiet refuge, I enjoy my classical guitar and the sand, water, fairways and trees of a golf course. I also like the competitive gladiator-like atmosphere of a tennis match followed by the soothing voice from Charlotte Church’s “Flower Duet” to prepare me for my next day’s work.
