Medicine is my second career; my first was in the high-tech industry here in Silicon Valley, where I was involved in the launch and growth of two of the industry’s earliest online services. Looking for a more direct and satisfying route to helping people, I entered medical school and got my M.D. from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 1995. I then did a combined residency in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. I completed my Pediatric Residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center and my Internal Medicine Residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

I began my career practicing both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. However, my commitment to adult hospital medicine is my focus now. For me, taking care of the sickest patients, those who are hospitalized, is both challenging and rewarding. My personal goal is to treat my patients with the type of care and compassion I would want for my own family. On a broader level, I am committed to optimizing health care delivery throughout our hospital, and part of my job at Kaiser includes administrative responsibilities for our hospital medicine program. I firmly believe that Kaiser is a great model for health care, and I feel fortunate to work with the dedicated team at Santa Clara.

My personal history starts in Milwaukee. I’m the youngest of five in one branch of a big Slovak clan descended from my mom and her two sisters, who came to the United States from Czechoslovakia in 1939. Much of my commitment to medicine comes from my connection to family; my deep affection for them inspired me to pursue the quality of care so important to supporting quality of life. In many ways a mid-westerner, I love the Packers, playing sheepshead (a very popular card game in Milwaukee), and socializing with friends and family. I also enjoy traveling and learning about different cultures.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
