Welcome To My Home Page

My name is AJ Van Riper and I have been a genetic counselor at Kaiser since 1995. The AJ is short for Alexander Jay, which is a bit too formal for me. I knew I wanted to be a genetic counselor since I was a junior in High School, when my science teacher first introduced me to the profession. I loved genetics and helping people, so this career was the perfect fit for me.

I worked full time as a genetic counselor for about 8 years before I started to spend half my time helping develop and maintain the electronic medical records systems used in Genetics. After 13 years of providing genetic counseling, my focus changed in 2006 when I became the Clinical Service Manager for the Genetics Department in Sacramento. I still see several of my previous patients, but most of my time now is spent maintaining the excellent care we provide in Genetics, as well as working to improve it every chance we get.

I am a California native, growing up in Southern California (the San Fernando/Ventura County areas). I went to undergraduate school at UC San Diego and then left the state for two years to do my graduate work at the University of Colorado where I earned my Masters Degree in Genetic Counseling. I have been in the Sacramento area since 1992.

Outside of work most of my time is spent with my family and home maintenance. I love to coach my kids in soccer and enjoy playing softball. I am a huge Philadelphia Eagles and Sacramento Kings fan. In the summer you can find me out on the lake in my boat skiing and relaxing.

I look forward to helping provide you the high quality health care at which Kaiser Permanente excels.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
