Welcome to my Home Page.

Please feel free to navagate around my page to find out something about me as well as some very good links on the left hand side that contain reliable medical information.

About Me

I attended the University of Western Ontario in Canada and did my residency training at the Montreal General Hospital, the Montreal Neurological Institute and at the teaching hospitals of the University of Western Ontario.

I received specialty certification in neurosurgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1976 and passed the certification exan in Neurosurgery, American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1979.

Although mine is a highly technical specialty, it isn't just technical expertise that is required to provide quality AND SERVICE! I try to keep in mind that patients often also need a little time spent helping them understand how best to get through an operation and all that it entails.

I joined the staff at Kaiser Permanente; Redwood City in 1987. The Kaiser Permanente model is the best (both cost effective and of high quality) health care delivery system that I know of. It's a privilege for me to be a small part of it.

Doctors are often asked why they chose the specialty they did. The simplistic answer for me would be that my father was a neurosurgeon but in fact initially I wanted to do general practice. Soon I realized that it would not be possible to learn everything about everything so narrowing the scope seemed appropriate. During medical school I was lucky enough to come under the influence of the late Dr. Charles Drake who was not only a world famous neurosurgeon, but was also interested in medical students. He took pride in those of us who took an interest in neurology and encouraged our participation in the neurology/neurosurgery conferences.

Interests

It's easier for me to dicuss what doesn't interest me than it is to talk about what does! Golf, tennis, foot ball and spectator sports in general have never had much appeal (with the exception of getting caught up watching the Olympics every four years.) Over the years various things have caught my interst. I used to play squash in university; at one time I flew gliders/sail planes; I've been on some wilderness white water canoe trips; bird watching and photography held my interest for a while (and still do but to a lesser extent.)

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
