Why I Chose Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

I describe Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as the specialty of function. Function is an emphasis in much of what I do clinically, especially in spine care. My decision of specialty choice was a difficult one due to my varied interests. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation appealed to me because of the broad range of disorders we encounter. The functional emphasis allows different approaches to problems while working closely with colleagues from other specialties.

About Me...

I obtained my medical degree from the Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. I also completed the honors program in medical education. I’m a life long Chicagoan, and sadly a Cubs fan. I practiced for ten years in the Chicago suburbs before giving into the many temptations of life in Northern California. My clinical interests include spine care, sports medicine, and inpatient rehabilitation. Outside of medicine, I enjoy a number of outdoor activities. I have completed several marathons and an Ironman triathlon in 2004. My athletic interests are now focused on playing squash. Sailing will hopefully occupy much of my remaining leisure time as my first introduction to the Bay. I have enjoyed my time here since my move and I look forward to working in San Jose.

My Philosophy of Care & Recommendations...

I encourage you to be ready to actively participate in your health care. The primary aspects of my treatment include an emphasis on function, therapeutic exercise and home activities. You will be educated on the medical, neurological, and mechanical causes of your problem. This knowledge will allow you to better understand your health concerns and to manage your recovery more efficiently. Prevention of reoccurrence will naturally follow as a discharge goal.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
