A note about my hours: I am in the office on Friday, but I generally reserve this time to address administrative responsibilities associated with the Department.

Welcome to my home page. Allow me to introduce myself: I am Vivian Philipp, and I am the Supervising Audiologist at the Hearing Center at Kaiser Permanente in Redwood City. I began working here as a temporary employee filling in for another audiologist on maternity leave in June of 1985 and became a permanent employee in October of the same year.

I didn’t necessarily grow up wanting to be an audiologist. When I started college at the University of California at Santa Barbara, I had originally thought of teaching, but I decided it wasn’t the field for me. Flipping through the catalog of classes, I found the Speech Communication Department. Because I had done public speaking, I decided to investigate further. Lo and behold, the other half of the department was Speech and Hearing Science. Realizing that I could combine the science I enjoyed with helping people made the decision to major in it very easy. After I received my Bachelor’s degree, I obtained on my Master’s at the University of Northern Colorado.

Shortly after graduating, I worked for a private practice in San Jose. My work included diagnostic audiology for adults and children, hearing aid evaluations, auditory brainstem response, and electronystagmography. My work here is very similar, although we don’t offer electronystagmography. I enjoy working with patients of all ages, and, fortunately, work well with the many children we see. I find a lot of job satisfaction because I am able to help my patients with their communication needs. Although I don’t fit hearing aids myself, we have two very good dispensing audiologists on staff here.

Outside of work, I keep busy with my husband and our two children; therefore I work Monday through Thursday to have time with them. All four of us are native Californians. We enjoy trips to Yosemite, to the ski country, and to the beach. We also are big ice hockey fans.

If you have any concerns about your, your significant other’s, or your child’s hearing, please feel free to contact me or my staff. For more information about hearing, hearing loss, or tinnitus, you can also check out the links up above.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
