My Biography

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

I completed my BS in Biological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, and my medical degree at Albany Medical College. After my residency training in Internal Medicine at California Pacific Medical Center, I began my practice as a physician in 2001. I also did a year of residency in Radiology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center but found that I missed the variety of patient care in clinical medicine. I am board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. For a list of my other credentials see below. After working in both the private healthcare sector and Kaiser Permanente, I strongly believe in the Kaiser healthcare model. The doctors here are a diverse and talented group, committed to preventive care as well as expert care of ill patients. I feel fortunate to call them my colleagues. I have been working in primary care and HIV care since 2001 and transferred to the hospital medicine department at Kaiser in 2009. As a hospital-based doctor, my job is to take care of patients during their hospitalization and arrange for a safe discharge from the hospital. I do not see patients in the office but I do work closely with their primary care doctors to assure effective follow up after a hospital stay. In my free time I enjoy reading, cooking, vegetable gardening, yoga, and playing flute.

FOR HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS

If you are currently hospitalized I understand this can be a confusing and frightening time for you. Many patients feel overwhelmed by all of the activity and the seeming endless parade of doctors that come to see them. Kaiser Hospital San Francisco is a teaching hospital which means that your medical care is provided by a team of doctors which consists of: an intern, a resident, and an attending physician such as myself. An intern is a first year resident in the internal medicine residency program. They are supervised by the second or third year residents and myself. I think that teaching hospitals are the best place for patients because in this academic environment we strive to keep up to date with the rapidly-changing field of medicine. You may also meet specialist doctors and at nights and on weekends, you may see a different attending doctor. The reason for this is to make sure that one doctor does not work more than 24 hours. This is to keep us fresh and improve patient safety. If you are ever confused about who is caring for you, please ask, we are happy to explain things to you and your family.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
