My Profession

Podiatry is the art and science of the medical and surgical treatment of the human foot and ankle. Podiatrists within Kaiser Permanente are given the unique ability to practice this profession at its highest levels. Podiatrists have a diverse practice treating all age groups from the infant to the geriatric. Our training encompasses extensive surgical residency training to the non-surgical medical management of the foot and ankle. Podiatrists are trained to treat all aspects of foot and ankle problems from traumatic injury, diabetic foot problems, and deformities of the foot such as bunions, hammertoes and flat feet. I chose podiatry because of this unique training and the ability to often make people immediately more comfortable while at the same time knowing that I have the skills and resources provided by KP to manage very complex foot and ankle problems. I learned a long time ago from my patients that when your feet hurt you hurt all over and with your feet being our "contact with the world" that good health starts from our feet.

My Credentials

Medical school California College of Podiatric Medicine, San Francisco, CA
Internship Hillside Hospital, San Diego, CA
Residency Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Hayward, CA
Board certification Foot and Ankle Surgery, American Board of Podiatric Surgery

My Practice Philosophy

My practice philosophy is that my patients and me work together as a team to achieve the goal of the best possible treatment of their foot and ankle problems. An important part of my practice is teaching my patients how to care for themselves and to prevent problems. I provide the evaluation skills, surgical skills and management skills to care for my patient's feet and I depend on my patients to learn from me, listen to me, give me feedback on their care and follow through with my treatment plans to achieve this goal. I strive to have my patients understand all aspects of their care. I will be their advocate for any care they may need to treat their podiatric problem.

My Tenure With Kaiser Permanente

I started my career with Kaiser Permanente as a 2nd year podiatric surgical resident at Kaiser Foundation Hayward in 1986 after graduating from the California College of Podiatric Medicine. I learned from some of the best podiatrists in the country how to be a podiatric surgeon. I also learned about the practice opportunities and benefits of being a KP physician. I felt that even in 1986 that KP was the best HMO around and was the wave of the future in providing excellent care to our members. To fortify this in my experience upon finishing my residency and went back to San Diego, California, my hometown, and went into private practice. It was not long before I was missing the Kaiser Permanente environment and culture where I could treat patients to the best of my ability and skills without worrying about pre-approval of labs, tests or doing surgery when needed. In my years at KP I have never been told I needed pre-approval for any treatment that is a benefit under the patients health plan benefits. Fortunately a position opened here in the Sacramento area and I became a staff podiatrist November 1987. I started out at the Morse Ave facility and Riverside facility. Later I opened the podiatry department at the Rancho Cordova facility. Finally I moved my practice to Roseville where I have been for the last few years.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I love practicing podiatric medicine at KP because of the challenge of practicing at my highest level providing the best care to my patients knowing I am totally supported in that goal by my colleagues and Kaiser Permanente. It is a challenging environment everyday that keeps me constantly learning and improving my skills. I love having available to me immediate access to my fellow podiatrists to treat complex problems. We have strength in our ability to work as a team across all subspecialties.

My Professional Interests and Affiliations

My strongest professional interest is training and teaching podiatric surgical residents. I have been the residency director of our podiatric surgical residency programs for the last 17 years. I am proud that our residency program has trained over 50 top-notch residents in the last 20 years.

I am a member of the California Podiatric Medical Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association.

My Personal History

I grew up in San Diego, California where I was very active in the Boy Scouts(myself and two younger brothers were all Eagle Scouts) and backpacked and camped the beaches, mountains, and deserts of Southern California..

I went to the University of Southern California on a NROTC scholarship. I graduated with a BS in Biological Sciences. I was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy and became a ship's navigator and surface warfare officer. When I reached the end of my 4-year commitment to the Navy I decided to use my BS degree to pursue a career as a podiatrist.

My wife and I live in the Sierra foothills above the Sacramento valley. Our avocation and love is raising and training champion Australian Shepherds. I am especially active in the sport of dog agility and have trained several of our dogs to top titles. My patients love my "dog exam room" which has pictures of the dogs in action!
