Thanks for visiting my home page!

I am a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the blood vessels in the brain and spine. This includes stroke, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and vascular anomalies. In addition to reading a bit more about myself below, please visit the links listed on the left of this page for further information about these conditions.

I perform a variety of procedures in the division of Interventional Neuroadiology to treat these diseases. This is an exciting and still relatively new medical specialty. It combines many of the latest tools and techniques used in radiology and neurosurgery. Patients affected by a wide range of neurovascular diseases may benefit from the minimally invasive treatments that have been developed by specialists in this field. The choice of treatment – whether open surgical or endovascular -- should be carefully tailored to the individual patient. These treatment decisions must be informed by the experience of the treating physicians as well as by the findings of the latest research, including the results of large, well-designed clinical trials when available. I joined the multidisciplinary team at Kaiser Permanente, Redwood City because our group, consisting of extremely well qualified neuroscience specialists, is committed to the best possible patient care using the latest techniques. Importantly, the Kaiser Permanente system helps ensure that treatment plans are always driven by what is best for the patient.

I grew up in Maumee, Ohio. I received my bachelor’s degree from Harvard University with high honors (magna cum laude) in History and Science, concentrating in developmental biology and evolutionary theory. After graduate studies in philosophy in Berlin, Germany, I received my MD degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, where I was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. I returned to Harvard after medical school and completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and a two-year fellowship in Neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. I then completed a two-year fellowship in Neurointerventional Radiology at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco. I received further training as a visiting fellow at the University of Paris Bicetre Hospital in Paris, France, concentrating on the endovascular treatment of pediatric neurovascular disease. Upon completion of my training, I became an Associate Surgeon and Staff Interventional Neuroradiologist in the departments of Neurosurgery and Radiology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and Instructor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. I joined the staff at The Permanente Medical Group in September, 2005.

My research has centered primarily on the imaging, diagnosis and treatment of stroke. I have been an author of articles published in some of the leading journals in my field, including Stroke, the American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR), Neurology, and the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR). I have reviewed articles for publication in the journals Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology. I have presented my research and been an invited speaker on topics related to Interventional Neuroradiology at scientific conferences in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia.

My clinical interests include endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, arteriovenous fistulas, and vascular anomalies in adults and children.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, traveling and cooking.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
