Biography

I have lived most of my adult life in California and am a graduate of the University of California (UC) system, having received my Doctor of Optometry degree from UC Berkeley and my undergraduate degree from University of California, San Diego, the crown jewel of the UC system. I was born in San Francisco, California and am a third generation Bay Area native. My nationality is Swiss/Italian and English, Irish, and Scotch. (To properly pronounce his name, say two, long letters: "A" "D.").

I come to Kaiser from a background in both private practice and research, having directed some six and one-half years worth of Federal Drug Administration research studies at the Stanford University Medical Center in the area of gerontology. I also participated in and directed the county optometric vision screening project, called MCT, for local schools here in Santa Clara County and has personally screened over 10,000 children. Through these projects, I have had extensive experience with both the young and the elderly in our community. Other training includes a low vision internship with the Western Blind Center and two pathology (disease) rotations with the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Palo Alto.

I am certified at the highest level in optometry, having obtained my therapeutics license from UC Berkeley. I am currently a member of both the California Optometric Association and American Optometric Association at the national level.

I am single and live a quiet life in South Bay, enjoying our access to both the outdoors and the culinary diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area. I am quite proud of my wine cellar that dates back well into the early 1960's.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
