Karen Smith-Wong, RN, MSN, PNP
Regional Metabolic Clinic Nurse Coordinator
Welcome to the Genetics Multi-Specialty Clinics and Oakland Kaiser!
About Me
I started my Kaiser career as a nurse on the Pediatric floor in the hospital. Now I work in the Genetics Department as the Metabolic Nurse Coordinator. One of the great aspects of working with Kaiser is the team approach. All of the members of the multidisciplinary health care team have something to contribute to providing a positive experience for each Kaiser member.
I began my education as a nurse at Howard University in Washington, D.C. where I received a BSN. My first job was at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center on a general medicine floor. I moved to California in 1989 and have loved living in the Bay Area ever since. Later, I received a Master’s Degree as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from UCSF. My work in nursing has been very gratifying. All of my work has been with the pediatric population in both general pediatrics and various subspecialties.
I started with the Metabolic Team in the summer of 2006. The team consists of three nutritionists, a social worker, a geneticist and me. We function well as supports for each other and for our members. As the nurse on the team, my job is to coordinate the medical needs of my patients. This includes supporting and assisting patients with home blood collection, assessing developmental and academic progress, and coordinating the medication needs of the patients. I also work with the Newborn Screening Program, tracking those infants who are found positive for a metabolic disorder.
My work with Kaiser has been fulfilling and gratifying, knowing that I am part of team that provides the best possible care.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
