My Qualifications

I was born and raised in San Francisco by an American Baptist minister and burn unit nurse. The youngest of four children, I originally wanted to be a sports writer for the San Francisco Chronicle. However, while attending Lowell High School, I realized that I wasn't even the best journalist in my English classes. Thus, I decided to pursue a career in medicine where I could best combine my abilities in science with my interest in working with people. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in nutritional sciences from U.C. Berkeley and chose to attend the UCLA School of Medicine because of its wide variety of clinical training opportunities. While there my interest in most every clerkship I did led me to believe that I should pursue a career in primary care. I chose to do my residency in family practice at U.C. Davis because they are a leader in training primary care physicians for the real world. Based on my Christian faith, my goals in life are to love God and love people.

I joined The Permanente Medical Group immediately after finishing my residency at the UC Davis Medical Center. I worked at the Fairfield/Vallejo Medical Center for seven years. During that time, I provided the full range of adult medicine services including hospital work and outpatient procedures (excisions, sigmoidoscopies, and vasectomies). While there, I also took on my first administrative responsibilities including Chief of Staff Education and Chief of Professional Affairs.

In 1996, I transferred to the Davis clinic where I focus on comprehensive care in the outpatient setting. My administrative work in the North Sacramento Valley initially involved physician recruitment, mentoring programs, and performance evaluations. In 2004, our mentoring program for new hires in Adult Primary Care was recognized with a TPMG Exceptional Contribution Award. More than anything, this award demonstrates that our medical group is dedicated to not only attracting the best physicians but supporting them and helping them thrive once they arrive. Beginning in 2006, I took on two new roles for the North Sacramento Valley: Chief of Marketing, Health Promotion, and Information Technology Innovation; and Chief of Physician Health & Wellness.

My Healthcare Practice

I am a family practice physician. This means I provide comprehensive continuous care for patients ranging in age from high school through geriatrics. I decided to do this because I enjoy listening to people's concerns and providing definitive care for over 90% of their problems.

My practice philosophy is this: I am here to partner with you to help you live as long and as healthy as you can (if that is your wish). I am eager to help you make healthy and sustainable lifestyle decisions. My main advice: eat smart, exercise regularly, always wear a seatbelt, drink alcohol only in moderation, and don't smoke.

Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente

I like working in an integrated health care system where the health plan, hospitals, and physicians are working in concert to provide our patients with the very best in quality and service. In short, we're all on the same page. I also really enjoy working with bright, efficient, and dedicated colleagues who are driven primarily by the desire to serve others.

My Outside Interests

Since 1989, I have taught residents at the U.C. Davis Medical Center on a regular basis and currently hold the position of Clinical Professor at the U.C. Davis School of Medicine. On four occasions, I have been selected by the graduating residents as the outstanding community preceptor.

In 1998, some friends and I started an all volunteer 501c3 community benefit nonprofit organization called Serotonin Surge Charities. To date, we have raised over $850,000 for scholarship programs, clinics that serve the uninsured and underinsured, and breast cancer research. Our goal is to get human beings to collaborate to improve the health & wellness of their communities - and to have a great time doing it. To find out more about what "The Surge" does, please log on to Serotonin Surge Charities.

From 2007-2010 I will be serving as a trustee for the UC Davis Foundation. As a big fan of the University of California system, it will be my pleasure to be an advocate for UC Davis and to help raise philanthropic support for the Aggie family.

When not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children. My personal hobbies include golf, photography, walking the dog, coaching and managing youth sports, and rooting for the Cal Bears.
