My Qualifications
I was born and raised in San Francisco by an American Baptist minister and burn unit nurse. The youngest of four children, I originally wanted to be a sports writer for the San Francisco Chronicle. However, while attending Lowell High School, I realized that I wasn't even the best journalist in my English classes. Thus, I decided to pursue a career in medicine where I could best combine my abilities in science with my interest in working with people. I graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in nutritional sciences and then attended the UCLA School of Medicine where I was able to experience a wide variety of clinical training opportunities and live in what I believe to be one of the great cities of the world. While there my interest in most every clerkship I did led me to believe that I should pursue a career in family practice. I was attracted to the residency program at U.C. Davis because of their long standing commitment to training primary care physicians. Based on my Christian faith, my goals in life as a physician and as a human being are to love God and love people.
I joined The Permanente Medical Group immediately after finishing my residency at the UC Davis Medical Center. I worked at the Fairfield/Vallejo Medical Center for seven years. During that time, I provided the full range of adult medicine services including hospital work and outpatient procedures (excisions, sigmoidoscopies, and vasectomies). While there, I also took on my first administrative responsibilities including Chief of Staff Education and Chief of Professional Affairs.
In 1996, I transferred to the Davis clinic where I focus on comprehensive care in the outpatient setting. My administrative work in the North Sacramento Valley initially involved physician recruitment, mentoring programs, and performance evaluations. In 2004, our mentoring program for new hires in Adult Primary Care was recognized with our medical group's Sidney Garfield Exceptional Contribution Award. More than anything, this award demonstrates that we are dedicated to not only attracting the best physicians but also supporting them and helping them thrive once they arrive. Beginning in 2006, I took on two new administrative roles for the North Sacramento Valley. As Chief of Health Promotion & IT Innovation, I work on such projects as physician home pages, our medical center website, web based patient education videos, and podcasts. As Chief of Physician Health & Wellness, I oversee a variety of programs that help our 850+ physicians strike a sustainable balance between rewarding professional lives and meaningful personal lives.
My Healthcare Practice
I am a family practice physician. This means I provide comprehensive continuous care for patients ranging in age from high school through geriatrics. I decided to do this because I enjoy listening to people's concerns and providing definitive care for over 90% of their problems.
My practice philosophy is this: I am here to partner with you to help you live as long and as healthy as you can (if that is your wish). I am eager to help you make healthy and sustainable lifestyle decisions.
My main advice: TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY - eat healthy foods; engage in physical activity you enjoy for at least thirty minutes most days of the week; get enough sleep, 7-8 hours for most people; and don't abuse substances. DON'T SPEND MONEY THAT YOU DON'T HAVE (debt can be very stressful). INVEST IN THOSE RELATIONSHIPS THAT WILL DEFINE YOUR LIFE. Your relationships with people (your social life), yourself (your emotional life), and God (your spiritual life) will bring you much more happiness and fulfillment than any material possessions you will ever have.
Of note, I make it a regular practice to pray for my patients. If you would like me to pray with or for you during an office visit, by phone, or by email, just ask.
Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente
I like working in an integrated health care system where the health plan, hospitals, and physicians are working in concert to provide our patients with the very best in quality and service. In short, we're all on the same page. I also really enjoy working with bright, efficient, and dedicated colleagues who are driven primarily by the desire to serve others.
My Outside Interests
In 1998, some friends and I started an all volunteer 501c3 community benefit nonprofit organization called Serotonin Surge Charities. Our goal is to get human beings to collaborate to improve the health & wellness of their communities - and to have a great time doing it. In 2009, we surpassed the $1,000,000 cumulative fundraising milestone for safety net medical clinics in the greater Sacramento region, breast cancer research, and the Maggi Carlile Memorial Scholarship Fund.
From 2007-2010 I will be serving as a trustee for the UC Davis Foundation. As a three time alumnus and big fan of the University of California system, it is my pleasure to be an advocate for UC Davis and to help raise philanthropic support for the Aggie family.
When not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children. My personal hobbies include golf, ping pong, photography, walking the dog, and rooting for the Cal Bears.
