About Me

All my life I was fascinated by scientific questions, and my early upbringing, especially my mother's influence, oriented me toward medicine. My undergraduate training was at Yale, where I studied molecular biology and biophysics. Having grown tired of New England winters, I moved to California, to attend medical school at University of California, San Diego. There I met and married my wife, Nina Schwartz, MD. She is also a Kaiser Permanente physician, and an Assistant Physician in Chief. Following graduation, I did an internship in Oregon, and then Nina and I bicycled across the United States and Canada.

We served two years as general practitioners at a small hospital on the Navajo Reservation, at Ganado, Arizona. That stint in primary care convinced me that psychiatry was the specialty for me, so I returned to California to do a residency and fellowship. Afterward, Nina and I moved to Napa, and Nina came to Kaiser Permanente in 1987. I chose to join her in 1990 largely because of what I learned from her experience: that Kaiser Permanente was, and is, one of the greatest medical care organizations going. In summer 2005 I was appointed Chief of Psychiatry for the Napa/Solano service area.

Nina and I have raised four sons, all of whom were educated to become engineers.

I speak Spanish, and some German and French; I read ancient Greek. I have written a book of poetry, and have published poems in literary magazines.(Check out Times Ten Poets where I can be found under "Jamie Irons" or take a look at my poetry home page (still "under construction") Thirty-Eight North.)

In my spare time I work on land conservation, and go hiking, fly fishing, and bird watching.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
