My Practice Philosophy

I believe in a strong physician-patient relationship. It is important in guiding you through health care decisions. Together we can team up to help you find healthier living.

About Me

I come from a military family and grew up in Citrus Heights, California. I attended the University of California in Davis and graduated with high Honors with a B.S. in Zoology. I received my Medical Degree from Northwestern University in Chicago and completed my internship at Harold D. Chope Community Hospital in San Mateo and my residency in Psychiatry with the San Mateo County Mental Health Services Department.

I am board certified in Psychiatry and Neurology and have published several research papers in various medical journals. I joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1979 and my major areas of professional interest include Psychopharmacology, Emergency Room Psychiatry, and Psychotherapy.

I am married and have four children (the youngest of which just graduated from CSU Chico). In my free time, I collect American coins and like to go to the Flea Market and Collectible/Antique shows.

Contact Information

The easiest way to contact me for non-urgent messages is to use my email: Fred.Bittikofer@kp.org. You can also leave a message with the receptionist or on my voice mail by calling the clinic at (408) 945-2915.

After hours you can still call the Psychiatry Clinic. You will be put through to the Psychiatry After Hours Call Center. They have well-trained staff who can be very helpful.

I encourage you to use the zero refill system if possible. We are quite efficiant at dealing with these requests and will usually be able to OK the refill the day we receive it. Remember to order your medications a few days before you run out and not wait until the last minute.

Also, new mail order refills are very convenient - no waiting in line! Check into details at the pharmacy or at members.kp.org.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
