Hello and welcome to my home page! My hope is that this site will provide you with an introduction to my background and practice philosophy. In addition, it contains a number of valuable and informative resources about Kaiser Permanente, our Department of Ophthalmology and our Cornea and External Disease subspecialty clinic.

After growing up in the Sierra foothills of Northern California, I traveled east to attend medical school at Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City. Following my residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center, I returned to Northern California for my subspecialty training. In 1994, I completed my fellowship in Cornea / External Disease, Corneal Transplantation and Refractive Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

Following my training, I decided to pursue academic medicine and joined the full-time faculty at UCSF as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. While at UCSF, I ran a referral medical and surgical subspecialty Cornea / External Disease practice well as being responsible for the teaching and training of medical students, residents and fellows. I am also proud to be one of the founding surgeons of UCSF's Laser Vision Correction program. In 1998, I joined the Permanente Medical Group as Northern California Regional Subspecialist in Cornea / External Disease, Cornea Transplant Surgery and Refractive Surgery. I feel as if the move has allowed me to have the best of all professional worlds. I absolutely love the challenging clinical practice that comes from Kaiser's large population base, and I have maintained my academic appointment at UCSF Medical Center. I am fortunate to continue to participate in many of my academic interests at UCSF including subspecialty clinics and the teaching and training the next generation of cornea surgeons. I have also continued to publish scientific papers and textbook chapters, perform clinical research and lecture nationally.

In addition to my regional cornea subspecialty work, I also serve in the role of National Medical Director for Kaiser Permanente's Laser Vision Correction (LVC) and Refractive Surgery Services. As such, I oversee and support the quality efforts of Kaiser's LVC programs in Northern California, Hawaii, Pacific Northwest, and Mid Atlantic regions. LVC is an exciting new venture performed within Kaiser Permanente and I am thrilled to be a part of it. Please click on the adjacent link to learn more about LVC at Kaiser Permanente.

Outside of medicine, my passion is adventure travel - the further and wilder the better. Closer to home, I enjoy scuba diving, tennis and photography.

I am absolutely committed to providing outstanding patient care. I believe that the personal relationship between doctor and patient is as important as medications and surgery. I pride myself on the personalization of the medical care that I provide. Please take a moment to explore the links provided. They provide a variety of additional information including some of Kaiser Permanente's achievements and details about the organization's philosophy of patient care.

I hope that you were able to find the information you sought through this webpage. If you have any additional questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me. You may leave me a message at (650) 299-2111, and either myself or one of my staff members will return your call.
