I am a board certified Genetic Counselor. Genetic counselors are health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Genetic counselors identify families at risk for birth defects or genetic disease, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, and analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and review available options with the family. Genetic counselors also provide supportive counseling to families, serve as patient advocates and refer individuals and families to community or state support services.

My Biography

I graduated from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA in 1995 with a B.S. in Biology, and a love of genetics. I went on to earn a M.S. in Genetic Counseling at the University of Minnesota in the year 2000. I became certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling in 2002.

I joined the San Jose Kaiser Permanente Genetics team in August, 2001. My responsibilities at Kaiser are divided between clinical genetic counseling and serving as coordinator of the ongoing Prenatal Ethnicity-based Screening Program offered through Kaiser. I enjoy helping people who have a variety of health care needs – from the womb (prenatal testing and care), to childhood (pediatric genetics), to adulthood (general genetics and cancer counseling).

Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, I spent one year as a prenatal genetic counselor at a high risk prenatal clinic in San Jose, CA. I also spent three years doing laboratory research in genetics at the University of Minnesota and Westmont College. Outside of work I enjoy hiking, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
