“Do not remove a fly from your friend’s forehead with a hatchet.”

Thank you for visiting my webpage and Welcome to our Kaiser Permanente Family! You must be wondering what that quote, which is actually an ancient Chinese proverb, is all about. I’ve been wondering about it myself, because I wouldn’t even swat a fly I saw on my friend’s forehead with a rolled up newspaper, let alone a hatchet.

Beyond the seeming silliness of the quote, though, is a philosophy that I have tried to follow, both in my personal life and in my career as your doctor.

My family is Chinese, but we all grew up in the Philippines. My favorite role, as we were growing up and playing, was to play the gentle doctor. And since I had 8 siblings, my hands were always full “diagnosing” and “curing” my patients. Of course, back then, the medicine I practiced was much simpler—all I had was a toy stethoscope and a white coat, but that was enough. (My siblings still ask me for medical advice every now and then, but while I continue to wear a white coat, I no longer use the toy stethoscope.)

After finishing medicine at the University of the Philippines, I spent some time focusing on dermatology (my sisters were all very happy because I was always there to take out their zits). But I decided to challenge myself further, and went on to do internship at the University of California, Davis VA Medical Center in Martinez, CA and my residency at the University of California, San Francisco.

My own experience has shown me that the way to wellness lies in a good doctor-patient relationship, shared responsibility in one’s health decision-making, open-mindedness, and positive attitudes. I ask my patients to eat a healthy diet, exercise, take calcium supplements, and avoid smoking. I also try to encourage my patients to practice safe sex, take vaccinations, and avail of screening tests (such as PAP, mammogram, sigmoidoscopy, or any other lab tests, as indicated) because it is really better to be safe than to be sorry.

I am now in my seventh year of practice at the Department of Medicine and it has been an enriching and challenging experience. I feel right at home here at Fabiola 4A, where I work with a wonderful group of knowledgeable, talented, multicultural team of physicians, nurses, medical assistants, a pharmacist, receptionists and a service manager. All of us want to make sure you have a pleasant experience each time you come to the clinic.

We have a unique system at our station where we provide a DOCTOR OF THE DAY each morning to provide faster response to your calls/queries while the rest of the team are busy seeing their scheduled patients or are out of the office.

As you must have seen by now, I am a strong believer in preventive medicine – on not having to use hatchets to remove flies from foreheads. Please start on your road to good health by taking advantage of the many services available to you.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
