Risk Factors and Treatment Options: High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common and treatable condition that increases your chance of having a heart attack or stroke. The good news is that lowering your blood pressure reduces your risk of having a heart attack, stroke, and several other serious health problems. There are many steps you can take to lower your blood pressure.

You may need to take medication, prescribed by your clinician, to lower your blood pressure. Eating a healthy diet that is low in fat and salt (sodium) can also help lower blood pressure. You can also help control your blood pressure by not smoking if you smoke, losing weight if you are overweight, getting regular physical activity, choosing healthy foods and managing your stress. You may also want to keep track of your blood pressure at home. Click on any of these links for more tools and inspiration.
