I was born in Mumbai (Bombay), India and came to the United States for my undergraduate education. I first attended Fresno City College and then transferred to University of California, Irvine where I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences. I continued my education at University of California Irvine College of Medicine and received my Medical Degree in 1989. During my years at University or California, Irvine, I received several honors including appointment to the Dean’s Honor list, the President’s Undergraduate Research Fellowship, and the University of California, Medicine residency, including a year serving as Chief Resident, at the Kaiser Santa Clara Medical Center. I am Board certified in Internal Medicine.

In 1993, I joined the Permanente Medical Group after completing my residency program. Since then I have also served in some administrative roles. Currently, I am a Director of The Permanente Medical Group in Oakland and have serve as the Chair of the Hospital Ethics Committee for the last 11 years. I continue my involvement in teaching our medical residents and Stanford medical students.

I have also been active outside of Kaiser Permanent and have been a past recipient of the Physician Community Service Award. I am a member of several professional societies including the American College of Physicians, the California Medical Association, the International Association of Bioethics, and the American Society of Bioethics, & Humanities and the Santa Clara County Medical Association. At this time I chair the Executive Committee. I continue to lecture on various ethics topics, including at the Stanford Health Policy Forum and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. I have also served on the Voluntary Clinical Faculty of Stanford Medical School. Since 1990 I have also volunteered at the Julian Street Homeless Shelter.

I have one son, and in my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening, watching movies, playing tennis and racquetball. I speak two Indian languages, namely Marathi and Hindi. I want to be certain that all of your concerns are addressed. If you forget to ask a question during your visit, you can e-mail me through my webpage:
