My Story

I was born in New York City and grew up in Westbury, New York. My early interest in science was highly influenced by Sputnik and the race to space, and I had the opportunity to participate in several local science fairs. In high school, additional interests included Yearbook and the Shakespeare club. During the summer of my junior year, I was fortunate to participate as a student scientist at the Waldemar Cancer Research Institute where my general interest in science became focused on medicine. I followed in my older sister’s footsteps and attended The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. There I got an excellent education and also met my future wife. I attended Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C. My initial interest, which was in orthopedics, changed when I had an outstanding dermatology rotation at the Bethesda Naval Hospital my senior year. After graduating from medical school, my wife and I moved to Southern California where I was an intern at University of Southern California, Los Angeles County Medical Center. We both fell in love with California! We returned to Washington D.C. for my residency in dermatology at George Washington Medical Center. Nearing the end of my residency in 1976 our bicentennial baby daughter was born.

Our next journey began in 1977 when the three of us settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. Prior to joining Kaiser in 1992, I worked both in a private multispecialty medical group as well as solo practice in Walnut Creek. During this period I served two terms as Chief of Dermatology at John Muir Medical Center. In 1979, our son, and the only California native in the family, was born.

My Transition to Kaiser Permanente

Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, my wife Karen started working at the Vallejo facility as a medical social worker and shared with me what a great organization it was. I began working part-time in Dermatology Departments at various sites in the Diablo Service Area. My experience with both patients and colleagues exceeded my expectations. I found working at Kaiser Permanente to be professionally stimulating and the dedication to excellent patient care fundamental to the organization. In 1998 I became a full-time dermatologist for Kaiser Permanente.

In addition to seeing patients, I am currently serving my second term as Chief of Dermatology for the Diablo Service Area. Each year, I am more convinced that my decision to be part of this organization was the right one!
