I would like to provide you with some information about the work of the Psychiatry Department, about myself and my own practice, as well as a few links (on the left) to sites providing more detailed information about some important subjects.
People are sometimes reluctant to call Psychiatry for an appointment. Perhaps some of this information will make it a bit easier to call when you, or one of your children, might need help.
What we do here:
I believe that we ALL encounter points in our lives when we get ‘stuck.’ By this, I mean times when we have an idea about the ‘right’ thing to do, but find ourselves somehow unable to do it. There are also times when feelings overpower our ability to make good decisions, and situations that become just too complicated to solve. Sometimes, we worry about ourselves or our children – and wonder how to best help them and ourselves. It is also important to realize that many uncomfortable or disturbing feelings like sadness, anger, anxiety or confusion are entirely normal and not cause for concern - unless and until their intensity or longevity begin to interfere with your ability to successfully engage in your day-to-day life. These are but a few examples of situations when a visit with a mental health professional can be helpful.
The work of this department is to be available to our members at these moments – when professional consultation or intervention may help you successfully address and get past the current dilemma. On the Child and Family Team, specifically, we are committed to helping children have more successful childhoods, parents have a more successful parenting experience, adolescents make a healthy transition to adulthood and, generally, families be more successful as families.
We are an interdisciplinary group comprised of non-medical psychotherapists (Ph.D.s, LCSWs and MFTs), physicians (Psychiatrists), and nurses.
About me:
I am an educational product of the Boston public schools and the University of Wisconsin (BA in English and Theatre). Prior to graduate school, I worked as a high school English teacher and as a paraprofessional with seriously disturbed teens. My graduate training (MSW) was completed at UC Berkeley in 1974, and I served clinical internships at Stanford's Children's Health Council and the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCSF. I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) since 1977 and became a Board Certified diplomate in Clinical Social Work (BCD) in 1988. Following many years in clinical and program management, I returned to my first and truest professional interest - helping people directly - by coming to work here in 2000. In addition to evaluating and treating children and families, I also provide a group for young teens (13-15 year olds) whose parents are divorced or separated and coordinate the Social Work Intern Training Program in this Department. I am currently qualified by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as both an LCSW Subject Matter Expert and as an Expert Witness.
My clinical specialty is the treatment of children, teens, and families. It is my deep belief that people CAN change! And, that the process requires two core elements: 1) That a person really WANTS to change something about themselves and, equally as important, 2) That the person is prepared to WORK HARD to achieve that desired change. Said in another way, when a person wants something to be different, he/she needs to be willing to do something differently.
I am a husband, father and grandfather, and spend some of my non-Kaiser time as a consultant in staff training and development. I enjoy writing poems and songs, reading, and walking in as many beautiful outdoor places as I have the time to get to.
Contacting Me
You are welcome to contact me directly via the following three available means of access:
1) If you are an active Kaiser adult member and have already met with me and have (or are ready to follow the instructions provided to set up) a personal Kaiser page through which you can also refill many of your prescriptions, view your own lab results, check on upcoming appointments, contact your other providers, etc., please use the(somewhat misleadingly named) link near the top left of this page: E-Mail My Doctor. This is the preferred method of communication because of it’s security for those of you who have access to it. Communications received and responded to through this means automatically become part of your Kaiser clinical record. Secure Messaging is limited to a total of 1000 characters.
If that will satisfactorily meet your needs, please use it for the added benefit of the security it provides. For your reference the countable characters in the paragraphs numered 1) and 2) in this section total over 1100 characters.
If that amount of space does not give you the opportunity to say what you need to or is not available to you for any other reason, please do not hesitate to use options #2 or #3.
2) If you are not an active Kaiser member, or do not have the capacity or do not wish to set up or the personal page mentioned above, you are welcome to email me directly at david.reinstein@kp.org. Correspondence received and responded to through this more 'open' emailing is less secure and may be, at my discretion, entered into your clinical record.; or
3) You are always welcome to call and leave a message for me on my personal voice mail. To do so, call the main clinic number (707-645-2700) and ask for my voice mail. As with open emails, chart notations of phone conversations is at my discretion.
No matter which method you select, I will make every effort to respond to your message as soon as possible. Unless I am out of the office, I ordinarily reply to all messages within 24 hours. It is my intent to be as accessible to you as is possible and these three options are available at times when it is not possible (or necessary) to see each other face-to-face. I hope that at least one of the above choices will work for you!
