About Me
I grew up in Seattle, Washington, but became a Californian through my education at University of California, San Diego, and University of California, Davis School of Medicine. I chose to become a dermatologist from an early point in my career and have not regretted it in the least. Dermatology is an exciting specialty that challenges me every day with a diversity of interesting skin conditions and patients.
Having trained in dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, I have extensive experience in phototherapy and interest in treating ethnic skin of many types, in addition to general dermatologic conditions. I have taught future dermatologists on staff at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and take pride in keeping myself current with developments within my specialty.
Choosing Kaiser Permanente as a physician was truly a family decision. There have been a total of four Dr. Mates’ at Kaiser Permanente, including my mother-in-law, father-in-law, and my husband.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
